Solving Age Problems

Steps to Solving Age Problems:
o Read the question to see if it is a "Now and Then" question.
If it is a Now And Then question, draw a chart with
Now and Then above the columns
Decide which person is going to be X. (Usually the person
being compared to) Enter the relationship for
X and the other person(s)
Read the number of years added or subtracted and
add or subtract from first column. Write this in the Then column
Read the next information. Who are they talking about?
That will be where you put the equal sign, then write the
new relationship.
The box with your equal sign has the equation you need
to solve. Use teeter totter technique to solve for X
Try for the following question
Jen is 32 years older than her cousin Howard. Twenty years ago
Jen was twice as old as Howard was then. How old are they now?

Pre Algebra

We are going to begin looking at Algebra. Algebra is a way of dealing with
unknowns that helps us find the unknown. It uses letters to take the place
of the unknown.
Therefore if we say that 3 more than something is equal to 15. This must
also mean that 3 less than 15 would equal our unknown.
So we could write this as:

X + 3 = 15 but we could also write it as X =15 - 3

Scale Project

Scale Drawing and Model
You will create a rough drawing of your Dream House. Keep it simple,
as you are also going to create a model of it. It must have the
following: A kitchen, a bedroom, a dining room, a living room and a
bathroom. All doorways and hallways must be 4 feet wide. All doors
must be 3 feet wide. You must have a door on the Bedroom,
bathroom and into the house.
Your rough drawing should be to scale (write down the
measurements as they are on the drawing and what they are in the
real world). The rough drawing is due on Monday, April 18th. (You
can make the rough drawing on Grid paper)
Your Good Copy is due on Friday the 22nd. This cannot be on grid
paper and must have accurate scale as well. The 22nd will also be
a Build day for the model of your house. Use stiff cardboard (like on
cereal boxes) for the walls. They do not have to be tall and you
should not have a ceiling. Your Model is due on Monday the 25th of
April. Be sure to attach your good copy of your drawing and your
Rubric to the model.
